The story of David Brevik's Marvel Heroes
« on: February 22, 2013, 09:16:34 AM »
Ok so heres the story-

1995- David brevik comes up with the idea for Diablo in high school, then makes Diablo

2001- Brevik finishes work on D2, lets others finish up the expansion.  He quits blizzard because activision are dicks, and sets off to make the best game ever.

2002ish- Brevik pitches the idea of a diablo game set in postapocalyptic demon-europe to his fellow blizzard expats.  They say "And lets make it a first person shooter!"  Brevik says ok, but that is gonna be hard.

2007-  Hellgate London is released to cheers and jeers (also, best game ever)

2008- Brevik lays low for several years to let Rob Pardo take all the heat from the Hellgate London debacle

2011- both brevik and jzn are wowed by Gazillion Entertainment's "Marvel Super Hero Squad Online", a Diablo-lite game targeted at young kids, where you can choose one of dozens of marvel characters, all with different powersets.  The game has a unique free model, where they mostly make money on selling extra costumes.  It's a big success.   Jzn and Brevik simultaneously think "Wow, if this little game had full scale production values and mechanics geared toward hardcore gamers, it would be the coolest thing ever"

2011-  David Brevik is named President and COO of Gazillion Entertainment.

2012-  David Brevik takes the internet by storm saying "the Diablo 3 devs are very nice but they don't know how to make a good diablo-clone"

2013-

Yup I just signed up for closed beta then. Looks like it could be fun, and I can grind through everything without paying a cent! Woohoo!

Also, sweet story Jzn.

Yes. Yes! FUCKING YES!

This looks like it will be fun. Someone remind me when it comes out or is in open beta. I have been playing a bit to many betas this last year and a half and I think I need to slow down with the amount of betas I do at one time.
Can we get this guy a "thread necromancer" member status or something?

They are distributing beta keys a lot!  I signed up about a month ago and they sent me one last week.   The game was basically made for me, as I'm a longtime marvel nut.  I'd even consider myself a comics historian.  The game is PACKED with references to melt the heart of any comic geek.  Every few minutes I see some NPC, scratch my head, then remember like 1 comic book from 1974 that they appeared in.

Even more geek cred-  you guys might not have any idea what i'm talking about, but there was a classic pen and paper RPG, marvel super heroes, that had a unique attributes system, where your attribute ratings were in the form of adjectives rather than just numbers.  I don't want to break my NDA, but let me just say that some of the mechanics are EXCELLENT, REMARKABLE, AMAZING (adjectives).

Another thing that impressed me is the skill trees.  Since there are umpteen heroes available, I assumed that there would be a lot of shared skills across the heroes.  Nope.  Each hero has its own individual 3-tab skill tree, each tab with 5 or 6 skills that can each be vertically invested in.   They look a lot like hellgate london trees, actually, in terms of the presentation.

You'll get the beta invites eventually.  But be warned, they are opening the beta only in 4 hour windows, twice a week right now.  So, thats painful.

Woot, got my beta invite. The playtimes don't line up great for me, but might be able to get an hour or two in here and there. Looking forward to checking it out though.

I got into the beta as well, but apparently the install installed everything but the exe files. I'm not downloading 6 gigs all over again. GG.

Let me know what you guys think of it.

Well that sucks :P If you're only missing a couple of files, we could try sending them to you perhaps? Unless you've already uninstalled it.
