Other Games / Guardians of Middle Earth
« on: August 30, 2013, 12:17:21 PM »
In case you guys do not know or are not Hobbit/Lord of the Rings fans a new game called Guardians of Middle Earth just came out for the pc. It was ported to the pc from xbox and ps3. I decided I'd write up a review on it. It is a game that is similar to League of Legends and DotA, however it is simpler as there are no items to buy while playing the actual. You can buy items in the lobby for your belt, but there are no stores while playing the actual game. You just use abilities and control your character.

I'll explain what needs to be explained first. The auto attack bug is that your guardian (character) will just stand there attacking no matter what command(s) you give. A "fix" was to turn off auto attacking. This fix worked for about 15 minutes and it came back unwanted like Samwise in the Return of the King movie after Frodo shooed him away (which I am still pissed at because it never happened in the books). I think that's it. Some of the names I threw in there are some guardians in the game.

First of all, the bugs and latency issues really kill this game. I think everyone knows about the "auto attack" bug that currently has no fix because it happens whether you turn off auto attack or not. Another bug I noticed is that my character randomly decides to run to the lane I was playing in. If this is a feature it is nice, however, there is no way of knowing if this is an actual feature because it happens so randomly and never when you want it to. Each time my character runs to the lane I can't stop it until it leaves the base. There is really no point to have this feature if it only works when my base is being destroyed. It is no fun being forced to leave your base and getting killed by your opponents because a bug does not allow you to interact with the game. There also appears to be some kind of attack bug where if you attack a minion, but move your attack is canceled whether the animation went through or not. I have only seen this a couple of times so this might be a latency issue, which leads me to the next topic.

Latency is another big pain in the butt. In my first game I constantly had between 24 and 50 latency. In my second game I was in the 120s. I could not tell the difference between either game. Both games had insane lag issues. There were points in both games where I could do nothing but stand there and get the crap kicked out of me by a bot/another player. I realize there is a Galadriel, the hottest being to ever live (according to Tolkien lore), on the opposing team, but come on. A Dwarf is only going to stare so long before he gets sick of the lettuce and wants some red meat. There really is no point in doing anything but auto attacking all game long because you cannot move away from anything. Just keep attacking until you die and hope for the best, which usually does not happen. If you use a skill or are low on health you need to pray to the GoME gods and goddesses to remove your lag issues in exchange for immense lag later or your first born child. At this point in time bargaining with your first born is probably much less painful, especially if the kid's as whiny as Boromir from the Lord of the Rings movies.

As bugs and high latency are the two most apparent issues any other problems cannot really be known. It's kind of like waking up after a night of drinking and finding the Great Goblin in the bed next to you. You know it must have been one heck of a night, but the most pressing issue is leaving without waking him up; everything else is superfluous really.

So what did I like? I am happy to say this game would be a lot of fun to play and worth the pre-order or regular $20 price if the above issues were fixed.

To start with the graphics are very pretty. The particle effects and all that other flashy stuff that Gandalf does on his days off are well done and add to the game. Of course, things get ruined when you let those nasty Hobbitses sneak into the fireworks tent and screw everything up.

I also enjoy the different game modes, it is a shame currently that it takes so long to find players for any type of game mode. It is not fun playing survival mode by yourself when you are as bad as I currently am and then add Galadriel (lag) and Unglob (bugs) to the mix. The single lane is a lot of fun too. Having several guardians in one lane is a lot of fun and keeps you (or at least me) from getting tired of the game as quickly as if the game only had one mode.

I am used to the unlocking system and I think it is done rather well. I actually finished a game, lag and all, to see what the rewards were. I got gems, 500 in game coins, and whatever else I was given for losing. Compared to similar games that is a large reward. If the rewards stay the same that means in 10 losses you can unlock a new guardian.

I also think the guardians are done well. I am torn between thinking the models are neat looking like the actors in the movies or corny. I have some pretty good arguments for both I would like to think. And no, it has nothing to do with Sauron and Gandalf bribing me one way or another. For the record, Sauron is offering me a better deal: my very own warg pup.

As stated in the first paragraph I hope this very early review has helped anyone with their decision on whether or not to buy the game. I hope and believe that these issues will be fixed soon™. No, really, they better be. I bet against the Witch King. If these issues are not fixed I am going to be in a world of trouble. Have a heart Zombie Studios I have already traded away my first born child to narrowly escape one death.

Diablo III / New Things Added
« on: August 25, 2013, 08:21:44 AM »
Not sure if you guys know this or when the stuff was added, as I haven't played D3 for a while, but some new things have been added.

The drop rates have increased, however the legendaries are still terrible according to some friends that play. You can also change the difficulty in a system to the /players8 D2 command, but this one can go up to 10 players. I've been trying it on normal solo and so far the only way I don't die is if I play WD and then it takes like 30 mins to 1 hour to clear the map.

Any other new things you guys have noticed or heard about?

Off-Topic / Mini desktops
« on: August 14, 2013, 03:52:25 AM »
I'm thinking of building a mini cpu ever since nvidia sent me an email about the computers (for reference: Does anyone have any experience these types of computers? I can supposedly build one, with water cooling, that is better than my current desktop for a lot less. The only problem is that I have no idea if any of this stuff would fit. I was using the revolt customization page as a reference and chose similar items.

I should also add that I am interested in water cooling because I have a cat, dog (lot of hair in the fans), live in FL, and the ambient temp is normally around 75-80F.

Anyway I was looking at a build like this:

Other Games / The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing
« on: May 28, 2013, 10:13:45 PM »
So I have to say I really like this game. It reminds me of a mix of Titan Quest and TL 1/2. I got it on Steam for $13.50 (it's $15 normally) and I think it is definitely worth at least $40. For an indie developer I would put it above Diablo 3 in terms of action RPGs. Last night I only wanted to play it for an hour, but kept playing for 4 hours until I realized it was almost midnight and was forced to save and quit. In those 4 hours I only explored 2 areas and did maybe 5 or 6 games.

The best of the game though is that it is actually tough. I started my first character on heroic difficulty and got destroyed on the second camp. Hard, the second toughest difficulty, is also difficult and I was finding myself out of health potions almost constantly, until I realized you can send your pet to buy potions for you (like in TL 1/2). Mobs are constantly beings throw at you and if you don't adapt or learn the best ways to fight them you will die.

The death system reminds me of older games. If you die you have to pay to resurrect anywhere except in town. Obviously spawning right where died costs the most, checkpoints cost the second most, and nothing for spawning in town. Luckily, you find gold rather easily and none of should really die all that often.

Oh, and did I mention there is also tower defense? Yeah, you go to your lab, set up turrets, traps, and so on, and then demons rush into your base.

In my opinion this is much better than Path Of Exile. Sorry guys, but I really didn't like that game :P If this game was made by a company with the money and mass amounts of people like Blizzard or Runic Games I would say this game may have been better than TL2. As of now I think it is even with TL2.

Anyone else play or try this game?

Off-Topic / Need help on project
« on: April 11, 2013, 07:37:15 AM »
Hey everybody. It's nothing serious, I just need help in locating an educational film (like a documentary) that deals with brewing beer in Africa, especially if it deals with brewing pre and post colonization. There is a lot of information in texts about this topic, but I've yet to find a video or film on it.

I thought I would ask here because we have people from different countries and backgrounds that might know where to look or what to search for. Thanks!

Other Games / Endless Space

Has anybody played Endless Space? I'm itching for a space game that is similar to Freelancer, but newer. I looked at Endless Space and the videos remind of Freelancer, but I am not so sure. Does anybody have any personal experience with the game?

Torchlight / TL2 online servers

Can anyone connect to the TL2 servers for multiplayer? I was able to connect before the first patch and now for whatever reason I can never connect. I have allowed TL2 through my firewall and have checked the tl2 forums for any information, but nothing has worked so far.

Tech Forums / PC related questions
« on: August 21, 2012, 01:31:19 PM »
Does anyone know if there are any companies out there that make a 2 or 2.5 inch SATA 2 or 3 cable? I just bought a new case and the hard drive mount is basically right next to my SATA ports on my motherboard. I don't like having 8+ inches of cable laying around.

The second question I have is: Is there a company out there that makes slim 120mm fans besides Scythe? It's not that I don't like Scythe, I just don't like paying $15 for a slim 120mm fan when I bought 4 regular 120mm fans for about $7. It doesn't seem worth it to me to spend $30 for two fans.

Off-Topic / Making alcohol
« on: August 10, 2012, 09:07:33 AM »
If anyone is interested in making their own alcohol I recommend that you do it. I recently made some Oktoberfest beer and it's the best beer I've had so far. This weekend I'm going to make some doppel bock or tripel bock beer and in about a month it should be non stop booze for me :D

Seriously, you can make as much as you want (legal limit in the US is 100 gallons for a 1 person household or 200 gallon for 2+ people per year). Most equipment is for making 5 gallons at a time, which is about 2 cases of beer give or take a couple of bottles.  The total cost of the beer comes out to about 30 cents a bottle. If you are a big beer/wine drinker you really can't go wrong with making your own, unless, of course, you are impatient and can't wait about a month for it to ferment/age.

If you are up for it I can give instructions and my recommendations. If not, just let this topic die.

Tech Forums / Video card help
« on: July 22, 2012, 06:08:34 AM »
I need some help with video cards. As of now I am on my second gtx560, soon to be a third. All of the nshitia cards I bought have been nothing but trouble. The first one, forget the model - at least 4 years old by now, had a nvdlknm.dll (or similar) error that nobody could fix and they gave me the whole "contact the seller" the seller tells me to contact the card maker and the card maker tells me to contact nvidia. Nvidia tells me to contact the other two. I got nowhere. So after four or more years I decided to try them again because the gtx560 was on sale. Now every single fan bearing is bad. I am tired of having to pay shipping to RMA their shit cards. Granted, fan bearings don't have anything to do with nvidia per-say, but it gives them a bad taste in my mouth when I see nvidia and automatically think "nshitia." The only good nvidia cards I have owned were BFG cards. Since they've gone under all other nvidia cards I have owned are expensive paper weights. I give them away because I feel terrible about selling the pieces of shit to people.
So now that you know my history with nvidia and blah, blah, blah. I am wondering what the equivalent (relative) ATI model is to a gtx560.

I also would like to know if what I understand as "passive cooling" is worth it. These are the cards with copper heat sinks and no attached fans or water cooling. This Asus ATI card is an example. I was thinking that this could be the way to go. If push comes to shove I can buy bigger or more 180mm case fans.

Diablo III / Blizz says D3 item hunt doesn't cut it
« on: July 07, 2012, 11:44:07 AM »

Basically Bashiok is saying Blizzard now realizes that there is nothing to keep players interested in Diablo 3 because their item hunting system sucks. Apparently, Blizzard thought this system would keep people entertained. Oh, how wrong they were.
